The two sides have faced off six times in the past 14 years but the Blue, Black and White’s relationship with the Scottish dates back over 75 years with back row Donald Crichton-Miller the first Bath player to represent Scotland.

DONALD CRICHTON-MILLER, 1931

Crichton-Miller was born in 1906, in San Remo, Italy where his father, the eminent psychiatrist Hugh Crichton-Miller, had a practice. He took the field for Scotland against Wales in Cardiff in February, 1931, whilst he was a Gloucester player before joining Bath, and in total won three caps. As a Bath and Hampshire player he played for London Counties against South Africa at Twickenham in October 1931 and went on a third South Wales Easter tour with the Barbarians later that season. He went on to become headmaster of Taunton, Fettes and Stowe public schools and while headmaster continued to coach successive generations of schoolboys. In 1997 aged 90, Crichton-Miller sadly passed away and at Commemorative Service, Lord MacLean described him as ‘one of the most remarkable and outstanding men I have ever met’.

IAN LUMSDEN, 1947

Born in Edinburgh in 1923, Lumsden was a fly-half who came to Bath after the second World War having previously played for the Watsonians. He was confirmed as the Blue, Black and White’s captain for the 1946/47 as well as Somerset and it proved a fruitful season for him as he earned the first of his seven Scotland caps. His international appearances came in the 1947 and 1949 Five Nations Championships, mostly from full-back. Lumsden was also a first-class cricketer with the Scottish national team and the Combined Services during the war.

DAVID SOLE OBE & DAMIAN CRONIN, 1980s

A skilful ball handler with dynamism and pace when driving forward, Sole (pictured) was mobile around the park and had a superb scrummaging technique. He was a prototype player of the 1990s who led from the front and was recognised as Captain Courageous – skippering Scotland, the Barbarians, World XV and the British & Irish Lions. He was capped 25 times as captain of his country in 44 outings and made 40 appearances for Bath. Whilst with the Blue, Black and White, Sole worked for Malcolm Pearce as a farm labourer, mucking out the byres and bedding down the cattle; then took up a milk round, collecting milk and delivering it to the dairy.

Another British & Irish Lion, lock Cronin earned 45 caps for Scotland. He debuted on the international stage in 1988 whilst with Bath and completed his final Scotland outing 10 years later, appearing at the World Cup in 1991 and 1995. Cronin was part of Scotland’s Grand Slam-winning side of 1990. For Bath, Cronin made 88 appearances before moving to London Scottish in 1991. His other clubs included Wasps and Bourges.

Dave Hilton, Andy Nicol & Eric Peters, 1990s

Prop Hilton kicked off his Scotland career in 1995 against Canada before making three appearances at the 1995 World Cup. He went on to feature at the 1999 tournament too shortly after departing Bath. His final Scotland outing came in 2003 against South Africa and he ended on 42 caps in total. For Bath, Hilton’s career spanned from 1992 to 1999 where he made 132 outings in total.

Dundee-born scrum-half Nicol (pictured) captained Bath to the 1998 European Cup – the first British side to lift the trophy. He joined the Blue, Black and White three years after debuting for his country in 1992 against England. As a player, he played like a back row and wasn’t afraid to get stuck in! Nicol captained the Scotland team on tour to the South Seas in 1993. Additionally, he played for the World XV in 1992 in New Zealand to celebrate the NZRFU Centenary and for the Barbarians in the Hong Kong 7’s the same year and on their Easter tour in 1994.

Number 8 Peters played 93 matches for Bath in an injury plagued career and scored 19 tries. His time at the club was brought to a premature end when he shattered his kneecap in a freak accident at The Rec during a league match with Leicester Tigers in April 1999. His final try for the club had come a week earlier in a 33-14 win at Saracens. Peters bounced back from injury on multiple occasions and his admirable comebacks saw him complete 29 games for Scotland, scoring five tries. He also played seven times for the Barbarians and featured twice for Cambridge University in the Varsity Match at Twickenham. Peters made his Scottish debut in 1995 against Canada, but had previously represented England at Under-21 level and in the Students World Cup before switching nationality.

Josh Bayliss, D’Arcy Rae & Cameron Redpath, Current Squad

Homegrown back row Bayliss debuted for Scotland against Australia in 2021 and made a key turnover in the closing stages to secure the Scots victory. He qualifies for his country via his Aberdeen-born grandmother and his determination to succeed on the field for himself, his family, his teammates and the city has been there for everyone to see over the past few years. At present, he has three caps for Scotland whilst he rapidly approaches 100 for Bath.

Despite having a famous Scotland father, Redpath (pictured) had the choice between England and Scotland. He opted for the latter, debuting and winning player-of-the-match against the former as Scotland ended their 38-year wait for a win at Twickenham. In the 2022 Autumn Nations Series, Redpath returned to international action and crossed for his try against Argentina. Debuting for Bath in lockdown, Redpath has featured 33 times for the Blue, Black and White to date.

Rae’s one Scotland cap came prior to his arrival in the West Country. The tightgead prop featured 85 times for Glasgow Warriors and earned his international debut for Scotland in the 2019 Six Nations against Ireland at Murrayfield. He joined Bath in the summer of 2021 and debuted on the opening day of the season against Sale. He has since proved a useful asset in the front row for Bath, making 31 appearances to date.
